The coming wireless revolution…

Re: ‘The Economist’, 28th April 07, leader column page 12, titled ‘The coming wireless revolution – When everything connects’.

This article provides an interesting update and some insights into the new wireless revolution which is soon to be upon us. The ability to have virtually everything connected, providing data on itself, and data on what ‘we’ do with it, has great potential – potential to enable us and the companies we serve to do great things, and the potential for us all to really make a mess of things.

I think the great determiner will be the ability to manage these ever increasing volumes of data, in a way that can be effectively, efficiently and reliably turned in to information, (which we have the option to use) to make better business decisions.

Lets face it, few have woken up to the fact that most, if not all companies are information management companies. For example:

• Tesco is no longer a supermarket where you buy cheese. The better it is able to capture data and turn it in to information about it’s suppliers, supply chain, stores, staff, competition, etc. the better it is able to improve it’s decision making processes.
• Vodafone and the other mobile telco’s are not really mobile phone companies where their network determines their success. They are information management companies. The better they understand their customers, processes, coverage, usage, equipment reliability, 3rd party performance, etc. the better their chances of making better business decisions (and may be one day clearing their debt and making a profit?).

What happens (or should happen) when you (individually or as an organisation) move from ‘unconscious incompetence’ to ‘conscious incompetence’? I think most are still trying to keep it a secret - after all, we are no worse than the competition!

Me thinks a subject for future blogs…

Act on Fact!
