Is this the end of the traditional ETL data migration programme?

We all know the typical data migration programme is far more complex, costly and time consuming than originally thought.

Little is known about the data and the business rules used to determine its quality. Gaining access to all the stakeholders at the start of the programme is difficult, and they only surface as things become ‘challenging’. As the deadline looms, the budget is nearly gone, the hard facts begin to emerge, key data quality issues hit you, and some of your earlier key assumptions are proven wrong. To top it all you, start to loose the highly experienced data migration experts you brought in at the start of the programme, to higher paid jobs, in more exciting projects, using the newest tools!

At the TMF in Nice last week, I heard Phil Dance (BT's Chief Information Officer) talk of the end of the traditional ETL approach. The new kid on the block developed by Celona Technologies offers what it calls a ‘progressive migration’ capability.

I went straight to the Celona stand for a demo. The battle weary migration expert will find what Celona has to offer ‘out of the box’ as more than a little interesting. Could Celona's approach mark the end of the traditional ETL project as we know it? – I really really hope so!
