Have we reached an Information Management 'tipping point'?

Way back in 1995 when I set up DAQUAM Solutions Ltd ( short for DAta QUality Management Solutions Ltd), I was really encouraged by the response I got to a full page colour advertisement I took out in 'Business Age' magazine.
As a result I had many phone calls and meetings, and remember being asked, and giving presentations at Oracle GUI-SIG and BCS meetings.
At the time, I remember feeling really good about what was happening, however, the reality of the situation was I was just giving free advise and in the end I had to take contracts (admittedly to do with data/information management) to pay the bills.
Looking back then, there were no jobs for Data Quality Managers, and there were only a couple of books on the subject, one by Thomas C Redman Data Quality: Management & Technology), and the other by Larry English Improving Data Warehouse and Business Information Quality) - You certainly did not hear any kids saying “when I grow up I want to be a data quality manager”!
Today, there is much to be encouraged about. I regularly get calls from job agencies who are recruiting Data Quality Manager type roles. There are now several consultancy services companies and we have seen an explosion of vendors and tools all claiming to be data and information management experts.
We should be encouraged. In order for departments to be able to recruit such roles, buy consultancy services and software tools, organisations are starting to move from ‘unconscious incompetence’ to ’conscious incompetence’ and see the need to spend money in this area (hence the growing number of vendors and consultancies) which are feeding off the back of this.
If it has taken 10 years for the tipping point between unconscious incompetence and conscious incompetence, how long will it take for the world to move to consciously competent at managing Information and Data assets?
